Prequel

There’s always a prequel 

to any drama

in the theatre of war

a practice run

a Guernica

a rehearsal

for what is to come.

In our long theatrical histories

it was always misty back then

but now the fog is so dense

that we can see nothing

so we cannot understand

the power play unfolding.

And we’re so swamped 

with possibilities

it’s impossible 

to know

which will be

the first step

the harbinger

of things to come

the beginning 

of the end.
