Jill Or Jeanie

She popped out of the vase

like a Jill-in-the-box

holding on

to the carroty snake

she’d prised from the glaze inside.

He’d rubbed the vase hard 

to make her pop out

like a Genie from the Arabian nights.

So perhaps, he thought,

she’s a Jeanie not a Jill.

He’s sure that if he dreams hard enough

the answer will come to him

like magic.
