Cairn
I now know for sure that
someone was here before me
in this vast desolate place.
I thought I was the first,
the first to climb
this high,
the first to venture
into the vast space,
into the unknown.
I had thought I was the first.
I would have continued
to think
that I was the first
if I hadn’t found the cairn.
Found the rocks carefully stacked
by someone to mark the path,
built by someone to show
the way to be taken.
Perhaps it was last week.
Perhaps it was millennia ago.
The cairn will know.
But me?
I only know
that I was not the first
to walk this way.
