Key

It was an ordinary key,

large,

made of grey metal

like the key that unlocked

the back door of my childhood home

which was never locked

so no key was needed.

It was an ordinary key

too large

for the padlocks on each door

of our un-self contained flat,

though the kitchen was never locked

so the padlock swung open,

its key lost.

It was an ordinary key

in an ordinary box.

It has no purpose now

its door is lost.
